It also doesn’t mean lowering your standards.

My P&G bosses were extremely demanding and held me to the highest standards. When I didn’t perform at my best, they didn’t criticize me but instead helped me understand I could do much better. When this happened, I was very committed to not disappointing them again.

Every person has unique strengths—play people to their strengths.

During our people development course, Jim shared a story that stuck with me. It is called The Animal School, by George H. Reavis. The story talks about a rabbit who had a nervous breakdown as he was forced to swim, a duck who was forced to stay after school for running classes, and a squirrel who failed flying classes. The moral is clear: every person has unique strengths. Don’t try to force people to be the same as you but find and nourish their unique strengths. There is this overriding obsession in big companies today of turning everyone into “jacks of all trades; masters of none.” They force people into roles that are not a good fit, and then fire truly outstanding individuals who, when put in the right place, would be absolute superstars. As a leader, your role is to help your people find their strengths and then put the right people in the right seats on the bus, in roles where they are able to exhibit their strengths every day.
